ESSAY CONTESTS! for both WHAP and APUSH students!

Below are two essay contests that students in WHAP or APUSH are eligible to complete. If you are interested in one or more of the following, please see me ASAP so we can work together to write and review your essay. Please look at the scholarship and/or money and trip opportunities if you win! There is also a link to former President Bill Clinton’s “Test your Global IQ Challenge” that students can take online. If they submit their email address, $1 is donated to Clinton’s Aid Programs–it only takes a few seconds so check it out and test your global IQ!

UNITED NATIONS ESSAY CONTEST INFORMATION: 

 This year’s National High School Essay Contest focuses on Millennium Development Goal Eight, and asks students to tackle the challenge of promoting development through international partnership.  Students 9th-12th grade are asked to write a letter to the President of the U.S. answering the following questions:

  • How can the U.S. build an international system that promotes good governance, development and poverty reduction?
  • How can the U.S. promote sustainable development and economic growth in developing countries?

The essay chosen to be submitted on behalf of the state of Iowa to advance to the national competition will receive a $100 scholarship.

3rd place nationally will receive a $500 scholarship

2nd place nationally will receive a $1000 scholarship

1st place nationally will receive a $1500 scholarship and a trip to New York to attend UNA-USA Member’s Day at the United Nations in March 2010

Essays are to be submitted online at www.unausa.org/essay2010.  The deadline for submission is January 5, 2010.

 National Peace Essay Contest sponsored by the US Institute of Peace

Under what conditions will nonviolent civic actions most likely achieve justice, end conflict, or lead to positive political and social change?

-Write a researched essay of 1500 words or less

-Deadline is February 1, 2010

-53 state level winners receive $1000; 3 National-level winners receive $10,000, $5,000 and $2500 college scholarships. State-level winners will be invited to participate in a prestigious weeklong education program and be honored at an awards banquet
