Hello all! To retrieve the appropriate materials for the Jefferson DBQ, please click on ”Jefferson DBQ and Rubric” under AP US History on the right of this screen. This is due next Tuesday, October 21. Parental Instructions: Allow 15 minutes for students to review the documents and 45 minutes to write–if you want to follow AP testing guidelines. (They can type this or hand-write it.) You, as parents, are also responsible for grading your student’s essay based on the rubric. You will give them a score (1-9) and take the score times 5 for a point total. I also will look over your grade for authenticity. It is possible the score you have given your student may not be the score they are given for the assignment. I reserve the right to adjust the scores as necessary. The key is encouraging your involvement in their classes and understanding how their essay writing is graded. In addition, you learn how they will be graded on their AP test (it is the same rubric).

Recently, there has been a flurry of articles and books published about the very first English Europeans to America. From the story of Pocahontas to John Rolfe to Roanoke Island and cannibalism these stories have captured the minds of us all. But is it possible that these first settlers were not the settlers of our youth? To celebrate the 400th anniversary of Jamestown in 2007, US News & World Report published an article for the January/February issue entitiled, the “Birth of America.” You need to access this article online and submit your responses to the following questions:

1. What ideas/beliefs of the English actually led them to disaster?

2. How does this article differ from previous stories you may heard about Jamestown?

3. What was key to Jamestown’s survival?…and the lessons learend from that survival?

You can access the article at: http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/070129/29jamestown.htm

or go to www.usnews.com and search for “Birth of America”-select the first option.

Thank you everyone for being so patient about your textbooks. It is appreciated. We did receive texts today, but they were the incorrect copy. So, we need to wait a little while longer. This will change the syllabus and my lesson plans, obviously. As of right now until we get our books, I will try to give you some time in class to read the chapters for your outlines. However, I will have to forgive the outline due dates for each Friday-it’s just not possible that I give you THAT much time in class. So, we will have you turn in outlines as you complete them and when we all get texts, we will engineer a due date for previous chapters. This, of course, puts more work on you later but the benefits of having your own notes/outline of the text will become apparent come review time. This will also alter planned assessments-you won’t be asked about material you haven’t had the opportunity to either read about or hear in class. Later, the assessments will change to cover text and class material. Thanks again to a great start to the school year-you are all wonderful students! Mrs.

Just an update in regards to books for our class. Textbooks are unavailable for check-out currently. Textbooks are on order and will hopefully arrive soon. This will change our syllabus and expectations for the outlines. Students will be given short periods in class to work on the outlines and expected to turn in what they can complete during classtime-this will in no way count against them. They will turn them in on Tuesday. A short quiz is NOW planned for 9/2/08 (Tuesday) but will cover only material from class and the 1st 10-12 pages of chapter 30. We’re still planning on a quiz of all 50 states on 8/29/08. Thank you!
