Hello! It has been awhile since I have posted! Which, of course, means we have been very busy these last few weeks before winter break! This week we finished our discussion of events leading to the Civil War. Today they had a 16 point quiz in class-most scored well! Tomorrow a dbq is due over the inevitability of the war and its causes. They were given the assignment on Tuesday–due Thursday. We will be peer editing these in class with the final grade assigned by me. Today they worked on categorizing the events causing the civil war in class–this is also due tomorrow. It should really help them consider outside knowledge in writing their DBQ. Friday we will have a brief presentation about National History Day projects followed by the chapter 16 id quiz. The students have been working very hard in not only my class, but additional Central classes these last few weeks! They truly deserve a pat on the back and a relaxing winter break!

Hello all! I just wanted to update you from all our activities last week! On Monday we had an in-class standard essay-students did pretty well. Some still need to focus on using evidence to support their thesis rather than just listing evidence. We began a new unit on Tuesday and spent the week completing our “fishbowl” activitiy. Each student was assigned a reformer to research and then acted as that reformer in a class discussion that was completely student-led. They did a fantastic job! They could answer questions as the reformer, ask questions as such and many “acted out” their characters with much enthusiasm! I believe the students really understood the depths of the reform movement through this activity. A reflection of the activity is due today. We will begin discussing massive westward movement throughout the middle of the 19th century this week (manifest destiny) and into early next week. They can turn in chapter outlines for 14 either Wednesday or Monday of next week. A tentative test is planned for next week Wednesday. No id quiz this week. I hope all of you enjoy your Thanksgiving break and really consider all the things you have to be thankful for! Mrs. Snyder

Congratulations to all students who just completed a 2 day world religions essay test! This is a trying test but is well worth the effort in demonstrating your knowledge! It will take me some time to get these all graded, but based on what I have seen so far, I am thoroughly impressed! We began our new unit over India today. We will discuss Asia over the next few months as this area of the world isn’t often discussed in other classes and is important to America today. We will be completing a timeline project in partners over India’s history on Wednesday and Thursday. This will be due next Monday. Thursday students will take their map quiz. On Friday, we will focus on the impact of Gandhi and the independence movement. Once we return from break, the textbook assignments will be due December 3 and we will finish our discussion of India with modern India and Hinduism. Keep up the good work!

There you will find an introduction to ABC-CLIO’s encyclopedia on the Arab-Israeli Conflict. Read the introduction and at the right of the screen is the alphabet. Click on any letter in the encyclopedia. Select an entry in that letter and read it. Write down the entry title and your brief summary of the entry. You will do this 3 times total. Submit your 3 entries and summaries online. AVOID duplicating what other students have written–check first! There are plenty of entries in the encyclopedia to avoid duplication! Then, select an entry from another student’s post and write down the entry on a sheet of paper–bring the sheet of paper to class on Monday (11/10) for a discussion.

We began studying Islam on Monday. Students will have an extensive map test on Thursday labeling cities, countries and geographical regions of the Middle East. Although the Middle East is not the only place where Muslims live, it is the center of Muslim life and students should know where these places are located! The thesis paper for Judaism is due Friday. Students should also be talking about their Islam presentations. Today they had an opportunity to create groups (if they wanted) and decide on their topics. I plan on beginning presentations next Thursday. We will be discussing the history of Islam and the impact of Muslim theocracies in addition to the Arab-Israeli Conflict, the Iraqi War, September 11th and Islamic fundamentalism over the next few weeks. It can be an emotional few weeks so make sure to talk with your students about what they
